CNN —The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is formally investigating Ford’s Blue Cruise hands-free driving system following two fatal crashes. Blue Cruise was first introduced in the 2021 model year and is now available in several models from Ford and Lincoln, the carmaker’s luxury vehicle brand. The investigation specifically involves Blue Cruise in 130,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs. Blue Cruise allows users to take their hands off the steering wheel and feet away from the pedals while driving on selected highways. In both crashes, the Blue Cruise system was in use immediately before the crash.

DETROIT (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a fatal crash in San Antonio, Texas, involving a Ford electric vehicle that may have been using a partially automated driving system. In a statement, Ford said it is researching the crash and the facts are not yet clear. The company expressed sympathy to those involved and said it reported the crash to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Both NHTSA and the NTSB have investigated multiple previous crashes involving partially automated driving systems, most involving Tesla's Autopilot. In past investigations, the NTSB has examined how the partially automated system functioned.

Automated driving systems are lacking in the safety department, according to a new report. Tesla's Full Self Driving system earned the worst marks, but most of the 14 systems tested poorly. Some say that autonomous and assisted driving systems are responsible for fatal crashes. AdvertisementYou may want to think twice before flipping on your autonomous driving system on the highway. The agency tested 14 systems, 11 of which received a "poor" overall safety rating.

June 15 (Reuters) - Supply-chain disruptions are easing as retail prices for vehicles are softening, a top Ford Motor (F.N) executive said on Thursday. Lawler said Ford's recent decision to join Tesla's EV charging network will not require additional capital investment on Ford's part. Owners of Ford electric vehicles will gain access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in North America, starting in early 2024. General Motors (GM.N) last week followed Ford's lead in joining the Tesla charging network. Lawler said Ford sees continued strength and growth in its combustion vehicles "for the next few years" as it ramps up investment in and production of electric vehicles.

May 31 (Reuters) - Electric vehicles may not reach cost parity with internal combustion engine vehicles until after 2030, Ford (F.N) Chief Executive Jim Farley said on Wednesday. He also predicted lower distribution costs from selling EVs online, as well as higher revenue from new software-driven digital services. Farley said Ford's software services business now has 600,000 subscribers, triple the number of a year ago. As the company expands its ability to harvest data from vehicles and drivers, offering insurance could be "a natural for Ford," he said. "Cooperation is essential," he said, especially for companies that may not have the resources to build out a full EV ecosystem.

The new Mustang will be offered only with pure gasoline power, at least for now. The new Mustang will be offered with a big 5.0-liter V8 engine or a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine just as in today’s Mustang. The new Ford Mustang has the familiar shape but with a more chiseled-looking exterior design. Since then, though, Ford has introduced fully electric cars, like the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV and the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup, as well as plug-in hybrids. Along with a 500 horsepower V8 engine, the Mustang Dark Horse will have various suspension improvements, as well as dark tinted headlight covers and other visual cues.
